{"id":987,"date":"2017-07-04T15:00:30","date_gmt":"2017-07-04T22:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/charlestkerchner.com\/?p=987"},"modified":"2017-07-04T15:00:30","modified_gmt":"2017-07-04T22:00:30","slug":"using-the-r-word","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/charlestkerchner.com\/?p=987","title":{"rendered":"Using the \u2018R\u2019 Word"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last week I put \u2018On California,\u2019 my column at EdWeek.org on hiatus, maybe permanently.\u00a0 Retirement has always been a funny concept to me.\u00a0 I\u2019ve failed at earlier attempts, but it\u2019s time for an earnest try.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I wrote:<\/p>\n<p>I was 16 when I walked into the <i>Barrington (Illinois) Courier-Review<\/i> with the object of being its sports photographer and walked out a salaried sports reporter and editor. \u00a0Salaried at $10\/week, a credit card at the Standard Oil station down the street, and reimbursement for photo supplies.<\/p>\n<p>I learned basic Associated Press style, who-what-when-where-why-how-leads, and the capacity to write on deadline. \u00a0Shortly, I was contributing 40 column-inches and a couple pictures to each week\u2019s paper. \u00a0It was about as much fun as a teenager could have, and it turned my head toward journalism as a career. \u00a0At the University of Illinois I majored in <i>Daily Illini<\/i>, missing so many classes that I had a reoccurring dream that I was in a final exam for a course that I had never attended. \u00a0This common dream was so plausible in my case that I kept a copy of my class schedule thumb tacked \u00a0to the bookcase next to my bed so that when I woke in a sweat I could verify my registration. \u00a0My grades were mediocre enough in the classes I did attend. \u00a0For more on the <i>Daily Illini,<\/i> see <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/on_california\/2014\/07\/roger_ebert_the_daily_illini_and_me.html\">Roger Ebert and Me<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I found love at Illinois, too, and shortly after graduation married Leanne Bauman, who remains my partner in everything. \u00a0We stayed on for a masters. \u00a0I graduated with the first class of MBA students that the university produced, and I believe that I hold the distinction of being one of the lowest paid MBA graduates in the country. \u00a0This maybe excludes nuns and inmates.<\/p>\n<p>With thoughts of being a great newspaper executive, I took a job at the <i>St. Petersburg Times,<\/i> working for the legendary Nelson Poynter on one of the South&#8217;s few liberal papers, one of five that supported the 1964 Civil Rights Act that changed society before our eyes. \u00a0I was inept at management but loved journalism until I wandered away into university life. \u00a0Recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/by\/nicholas-casey\">Nick Casey<\/a>, the <i>New York Times<\/i> foreign correspondent who spoke at our grandson&#8217;s high school graduation, asked me why I left newspapering, \u00a0I thought for a second and replied, &#8220;Because I figured out that I wasn&#8217;t going to be you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Academic life, almost all of it at Claremont Graduate University, served me well, and I think that I reciprocated with good work. \u00a0They gave me some momentos after I had been on the faculty for 35 years, and I concluded that three and a half decades of teaching was both wonderful and sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>The prospect of bookending my career with journalism seemed appealing, and I thought that I might write a dozen or so commentary pieces over a year. \u00a0Since starting &#8216;On California&#8217; in 2014, the column has posted 281 pieces, most written by me and edited by Leanne.<\/p>\n<p>Both author and editor need a rest and a taste of retirement*, so we&#8217;ll put &#8216;On California&#8217; on hiatus. \u00a0Thanks to you all.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u2014\u2014\u2014\u201430\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0(*Spoiler alert: \u00a0I\u2019ve flunked retirement before.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Last week I put \u2018On California,\u2019 my column at EdWeek.org on hiatus, maybe permanently.\u00a0 Retirement has always been a funny concept to me.\u00a0 I\u2019ve failed at earlier attempts, but it\u2019s time for an earnest try.
