{"id":888,"date":"2014-04-04T12:49:48","date_gmt":"2014-04-04T19:49:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/charlestkerchner.com\/?p=888"},"modified":"2014-04-04T12:55:03","modified_gmt":"2014-04-04T19:55:03","slug":"a-small-tribute-to-a-fallen-photographer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/charlestkerchner.com\/?p=888","title":{"rendered":"A Small Tribute to a Fallen Photographer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I weep for fallen journalists, particularly photographers who put themselves in harm\u2019s way to tell us stories that we find inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p>I never met Anja Niedringhaus, the Associated Press photographer who was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/04\/05\/world\/asia\/journalists-shot-by-police-officer-in-afghanistan.html?hp\" target=\"_blank\">intentionally shot by Afghan police officer on Friday<\/a>, but I cry for her nonetheless.\u00a0 Reporting war is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.\u00a0 According to one count, <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_journalists_killed_during_the_War_in_Afghanistan_(2001\u2013present)\" target=\"_blank\">16 journalists have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001<\/a>, twice the number that died in World War II. \u00a0We don&#8217;t have flags and special ceremonies for these fallen, so those of us who write and photograph should at least pause.<\/p>\n<p>Take a moment and look at her images courtesy of the <i>Atlantic <\/i>blog <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/infocus\/2013\/11\/afghanistan-seen-through-the-lens-of-anja-niedringhaus\/100621\/#img06\" target=\"_blank\">In Focus<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Then ask yourself, why are we there?\u00a0 Who are we helping?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I weep for fallen journalists, particularly photographers who put themselves in harm\u2019s way to tell us stories that we find inconvenient.
