{"id":529,"date":"2012-01-11T17:29:29","date_gmt":"2012-01-12T00:29:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/charlestkerchner.com\/?p=529"},"modified":"2012-01-11T17:29:29","modified_gmt":"2012-01-12T00:29:29","slug":"nominate-the-most-transformational-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/charlestkerchner.com\/?p=529","title":{"rendered":"Nominate the Most Transformational Schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Blogger Sam Chaltain, former director of the Forum for Education and Democracy, is collecting nominees for the most transformational learning environments in the world.\u00a0 So far, there are 58 nominees, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.samchaltain.com\/blog\">a list of which is on Sam\u2019s site<\/a><\/strong>, and he invites additions.<\/p>\n<p>His template for transformation comes from the <a href=\"http:\/\/qedfoundation.org\/index.php\/component\/content\/article\/54\">QED Foundation<\/a>: learning moves from classroom to community, organization from compliance to cooperation.\u00a0 You get the drift.\u00a0 If test score advancement is your singular goal, then your favorite school is unlikely to make the cut.<\/p>\n<p>Sam\u2019s list contains some of the places I would nominate, and I would add these three:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Avalon School in St. Paul, Minnesota.\u00a0 The 187 students in this charter school learn through projects they design.\u00a0 Their Congress devises the school\u2019s rules, and their restorative justice system handles infractions and disputes.\u00a0 The faculty (the executive branch of government) divides leadership roles including hiring, budgeting, and employee evaluation and discharge.<\/li>\n<li>High Tech High in San Diego County, California.\u00a0 Another deeply project-based set of schools in which learning is based on the integration of head and hands, school and community, race and class.\u00a0 Teachers design the curriculum.\u00a0 Lots of highly engaged students, and a leadership team of education evangelicals.<\/li>\n<li>Scotland, the first country in the world to develop an educational intranet (a closed internet) for its schools, families, teachers, and students.\u00a0 But the purpose of Glow, as the connectivity system is called, is to foster collaboration and the development of great learning experiences that fulfill the aims of that country\u2019s national curriculum.\u00a0 Rather than turn to publishers, the Scots turned to their teachers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blogger Sam Chaltain, former director of the Forum for Education and Democracy, is collecting nominees for the most transformational learning environments in the world.\u00a0 So far, there are 58 nominees, a list of which is on Sam\u2019s site, and he invites additions.
